What can you give a dog for diarrhea?

Dogs are much like people, sometimes they experience stomach upset. This can be uncomfortable for the dog and require messy clean up for you, the owner. Luckily, if you are sure that the dog has not gotten into anything poisonous such as chemicals or plants, there are some things that you can do from home to help your dog feel better. If you believe that your dog has gotten into a harmful substance you should not administer anything from home and you should immediately take your dog to the veterinarian, otherwise, follow these really easy steps.

The first thing that you will want to do is give your dog one teaspoon of Pepto Bismol per pound of body weight. You can also give them the tablets, which they may chew. If you need to give liquid simply put it in a syringe and squirt in the back of their mouth. Do this every four to six hours, and you should see a slowing in the stomach discomfort over time. If this doesn’t seem to help over the course of 48 hours it may be time to make a call to the vet.

When a dog has diarrhea you need to take them off of their normal diet and give them foods that will be easier on the stomach. You may need to start by feeding your dog small amounts of rice and make sure that they have plenty of water available. When the dog is able to hold down the rice and water you can introduce chicken to the rice. Feed the dog this mixture for at least 24 hours after the diarrhea stops and then slowly reintroduce the normal diet. Be sure that you are feeding your dog the same type of food at each meal, as changing food or changing it rapidly can cause diarrhea in any dog.
