Question: What to do if your dog has a cold?
Cold weather usually sparks off cough and cold in most households and in many houses, even the family dog is down with the chill! Managing cold-struck people is a hectic job, but what about when your dog catches a cold? Most dog owners have the same headache in the winter season. Of course, dogs being dogs are exposed to far more germs than humans. But even a dog will suffer from such attacks, so take proper measures before the condition worsens.
Precaution
Do not leave your dog out in bad weather. When it is raining or stormy, get your dog to safety. Either get the dog into the house for some time or make sure your dog is at least not exposed to the elements. Get the necessary guidance from a vet. Do not experiment with foods that could make your dog ill in this season. Keep your dog warm.
Is my dog down with ordinary cold?
At the end of the year, as the chilly weather sets in, it is time for you to safeguard your pet dog from cold and other respiratory problems. The first thing to do is make sure what problem your dog is suffering from. Of course, the normal symptoms of a cold may be visible. Your dog might have a running nose and watery eyes, develop a hacking cough and so on. But not all such symptoms represent the ordinary cold. If you suspect something, just take your pet to the vet to be sure. But if you are able to conclude that your dog has the normal cold, then it is your responsibility to care for your dog. Even energetic young puppies suffer from bouts of cold, just like the aged dogs. These two age groups are more prone to virus attacks than the average adult dog.
- Pump up the nutrition: make sure your dog gets the necessary healthy food to build immune system to face any viral attack.
- Keep your pet warm: your dog will find it difficult to breathe freely in the chilly weather. So keep the dog warm and well-fed during the cold days. Even inside the kennel, provide warm rugs to keep your dog comfortable.
- Drinking Water: if you keep drinking water outside for your dog, check to see if the water is very cold. Give lukewarm water so that your dog doesn’t have cough problems later.
- Snow: if you live in places where cold weather is frequent, then make sure to care for your dog when it goes out to play. Check for snowballs stuck in your dog’s feet.
- For hyperactive puppies: many pups are most likely to run out of the house as soon as they get free. While allowing the pup to spend the excess energy, do not leave it out for too long!
- Extra warmth: city dogs, especially toy dogs are more prone to attacks than the more robust country dogs. So get a warm jacket for your dog in the cold weather.
